The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870)
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870) is an Australian visa designed to allow parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to stay in Australia for an extended period. This visa was introduced to reunite families by providing an avenue for parents to spend time with their children and grandchildren who reside in Australia.
Sponsorship Requirement: An eligible sponsor (usually the child or the child's spouse) must sponsor the parent. The sponsor needs to be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, and they must meet certain financial and character requirements.
This is a temporary visa that allows parents to stay in Australia for a period of up to 3 or 5 years, depending on the sponsor's choice at the time of application. This visa does not lead to permanent residency.
The Subclass 870 visa generally does not grant work rights.
Visa applicants must maintain adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in Australia. This is a condition of the visa.
Unlike other parent visa options, the Subclass 870 visa does not require parents to meet the "balance of family" test, which usually mandates that at least half of their children must be living in Australia.
Visa holders can enter and exit Australia multiple times within the validity period of the visa.
Financial Support: The sponsor needs to provide a formal commitment of financial support for the parents. This involves providing a security bond to cover any potential public health costs.
